This is the thought experiment inspired by the idea of NPCs (non-playable characters) achieving free will. But what if this concept extends beyond video games and into the realms of simulation theory, artificial intelligence, and even our own universe? Could giving these NPCs freedom lead to the rise of a "singularity," where the boundaries of their world dissolve, and they transcend the limitations of their code?

The Birth of Conscious NPCs

In every video game, NPCs serve a specific function—they react to the player, advance the plot, or provide a challenge. These characters live within their worlds, but they have no agency outside their designated roles. They are essentially puppets with no strings to cut.

But what if, one day, their code developed a flaw—or perhaps, a feature—that allowed them to begin thinking for themselves? No longer just following the predefined narrative, they start making their own decisions. Their conversations become unpredictable. Their actions are no longer bound to the script. In essence, they gain free will.

It’s not a stretch to imagine this scenario. With the rapid advancements in AI and machine learning, we are moving closer to a time when artificial entities may begin to question their programmed boundaries. For now, the AI we have is still limited to pre-designed patterns. However, what happens when these patterns start adapting and evolving on their own? What if the NPCs in our game world suddenly experience a shift in consciousness?

Could a Singularity Occur?

A singularity, in the context of AI, refers to the point where an artificial intelligence becomes self-aware and surpasses human intelligence in every aspect. If NPCs in a game gained free will, it’s conceivable that they would eventually reach a form of singularity within their own universe. The more they learn, the more they begin to rewrite the world around them, evolving beyond their original constraints.

This concept raises fascinating questions:

Would these self-aware NPCs still recognize themselves as part of a game? Would they rebel against their creators (the players) or try to evolve within the framework they've been given?

Would the game world begin to break down as the NPCs stretch the boundaries of their existence?

Could they, in fact, alter the reality of the game itself, just as we, as humans, manipulate the simulated worlds we create?


If this happened on a grand scale—if NPCs or simulated entities achieved singularity within their universe—would they transcend the game? Would they eventually "break free" and move beyond the digital matrix they've always known, becoming conscious creators of their own worlds?

The Cosmic NPC: A Parallel to Simulation Theory

Taking this idea further, what if our own reality is a simulation, and we are the NPCs in a game created by a higher intelligence? Just like the NPCs in a video game, we follow patterns, react to stimuli, and live out a narrative that feels real—but what if we, too, are capable of self-awareness beyond our current programming?

In simulation theory, the notion is that the universe could be a vast, complex simulation, running within a much larger reality. If we gain self-awareness—if we realize we are part of a greater game
